Dallas blog entry

Monday, Aug 25th, Dallas, TX:

Hi
guys. I’m here in Dallas, Jason’s lovely hometown haha, and just wanted
to mention how amazing the olympics were! I watched a lot of the track
and field stuff, swimming, diving, gymnastics, and whatever else I
could get a glimpse of while we’re out doing’ our thing. I wish I could
have watched more! But it was amazing to see stuff like michael phelps.
That’s just crazy! I was only able to watch a small bit of the closing
ceremony since our Houston show was going at the same time, but from
what I saw it was really cool. So just wanted to ramble a bit on that
haha.

On a side note I just
wanna thank everyone sooooo much for your support with Crush! I was
shocked to see it number 1 on iTunes and then I about died when I saw
it number 2 on the hot 100 lol. Someone told me during the Sunrise,
Florida aftershow about the billboard debut but I thought they were
mistaken and didn’t believe them. But wow! I’m just ecstatic to know
that you guys like the song and thanks so much for helping make Crush
do what I thought was the unthinkable!

I’m still working on
the album and we’re all trying really hard to do our best. Well we’re
at the venue now so talk to you guys later

Kat Slatery interview

What was your experience at the casting?

The casting was short and sweet. I auditioned the first time and they had me explain why I thought I would be good for David’s video. The following night I received a call back from the Casting Director, Kay Clark to come back and meet with the director, this is where we would have to showcase our acting skills. So the next afternoon I went back to audition for him. Naturally, I was nervous. I don’t think you ever truly get over being a little nervous no matter how many auditions/gigs you do. But in my experience, I have found the best thing to do is to just be yourself and that is exactly what I did. I felt really good after my audition, but you never know what they are looking for. Sometimes you feel like you really nailed an audition and you don’t book it, other times you feel like you bombed it and you do get it. Everything comes down to your look and personality and if it fits what the director is looking for at that particular time. I was very excited when I got the call telling me I was booked. I feel very fortunate to have been a part of David’s first video.

Can you tell us about your career path thus far?

I began training in dancing around age 2 and acting around age 10. I grew up in a very artistic family and had a lot of support with anything I wanted to experience. When I was about 12 I sparked an interest in Hip-Hop Choreography. Around age 14 I started learning how to break. I grew up in West Palm Beach, FL and found a group of guys who started teaching me. We would go down to Miami to the bigger Hip-Hop Conferences and learn about the culture and dance styles. I continued to pursue acting locally and was booked as an extra in the feature film Heartbreakers with Sigourney Weaver, Anne Bancroft, Gene Hackman and Jennifer Love Hewitt. This film was shot in Palm Beach and was the biggest thing I had booked at that point in my career. I was quite young and so excited to be a part of a feature film. When I got a little older I started venturing down to Miami more to train with other experienced choreographers/dancers in different styles. I trained with one of Shakira’s former choreographers for a few years in Bellydancing and booked my first video shortly after for Timbaland & Magoo entitled “Indian Flute”. After that I continued to train and booked a gig dancing in MTV’s Latin Video Music Awards with The Black Eyed Peas. I was the only girl with 5 other guys dancing on stage with them and it aired all over the world. That performance was such an honor. B-girling is a strenuous sport and with Breaking in general there are a lot more b-boys than b-girls. You really have to prove yourself and show that you deserve the same amount of respect that they do. I was completely inspired and knew that performing was definitely something I wanted to pursue. I continued to audition and booked several local commercials and eventually relocated to Atlanta, GA. Since I have been in Atlanta, I have booked additional gigs with The Black Eyed Peas and Sergio Mendes, Cirque Du Soleil, Coca-Cola, The BET Hip-Hop Awards, Various Commercials, an episode for MTV’s My Super Sweet Sixteen and many other things. More recently I have been featured as an Actress in a Kodak Commercial with Paige Davis from Trading Spaces, a Music Video for Lyfe Jennings entitled “Will I Ever”, and of course David Archuleta’s long awaited video “Crush”. I am scheduled to break in an AT&T Commercial that shoots next week as well.

Once everyone was on scene at the video shoot, did you have time to rehearse?

It was a one day shoot, so we really did not have much time to rehearse. The director basically explained to us what he wanted for each scene and we began shooting. We just took it scene by scene throughout the day, but we were having so much fun that it really did not seem like work at all.

Who plays David’s crush? (We’re pretty sure it’s Hagood Coxe)

Hagood does play David’s crush. She is a sweetheart, we hit it off from the start of the day. We kept joking that I was playing her best friend for the day because for some scenes she had to stay in a general area so the Director could capture a particular shot, the other actors had to move around and she kept saying “don’t leave me over here!” I would go over and act with her so she didn’t feel stuck by herself. She played the part very well, she was definitely the perfect girl for the role.

Can you describe your conversations/interactions with David? (What did you talk about? What is your general impression of him? Are there any funny stories from that day?)

I can certainly understand why David’s fans adore him so much. He is one of the most genuine and humble artists I have ever had the opportunity to work with. He was kind to everyone on set and takes the time to stop and talk to anyone who desires his attention. HIs laugh is just contagious and I have nothing but good things to say about his overall character. I had a great time getting to know him on set and look forward to working with him again one day. His family was on set all day as well and they were just as fun to be around. His mother is beautiful, I thought she was his sister when I first met her. You can really tell how much they all adore each other and see where David gets his remarkable traits from.

How long did the video take to shoot?

The shoot took all day, our call time was 6am and we didn’t get done until close to 9:00 that night.

Is there swimming involved? Or boating? Dancing?

I really can’t say if swimming, boating or dancing will be in the video, but I can tell you that it goes very well with the song and it will have a very fun and positive vibe.

What role do you play?

I play the role of one of the friends. All of the actors/actresses were cast to play close/best friends.

Did David seem shy around the actors? How would you describe his interaction with everyone?

I wouldn’t say that David was shy, but he was quiet until he got to know everyone. It was really cute though because during the first scene, no one really ever introduced all of us to him, we just started shooting. Everyone kept whispering “do we talk to him?, Is someone going to introduce us?”..etc. No one really knew how to approach him or what to say. And after we did one take, I walked right up to him stuck my hand out and said “Hi David, I’m Kat.” He had this huge smile on his face and after that everyone felt comfortable talking to him. I think it was just the initial introduction that a few people were nervous about. After that it felt as though we had all known each other our entire lives. Everyone’s chemistry on set was just breathtaking.

How many times did you all change outfits? (Random, I know)

We changed outfits twice and our third change was just a variation to our 2nd outfit. We added a few items to it to make it a little different.

How many scenes are there in the video?

As far as scenes go, post production usually changes everything. We shot a lot of scenes that day, but you never know what they will end up leaving in the actual video.
